The Miami Marlins make one deal on trade deadline Thursday.
They acquire 24 year old starting pitcher Jarred Cosart from the Houston Astros along prospects Kike Hernandez and Austin Wates. The Marlins sent back outfielder Jake Marisnick, last year's 1st round pick Colin Moran, prospect Francis Martes, and a 2015 draft pick.
Cosart is expected to slide into the Marlins rotation immediately. He is 9-7 with a 4.40 ERA for the Astros this season.
Between AA and AAA, Hernandez, a utility player, is hitting .336 with 9 home runs and 36 RBI in 77 games this year. Wates, an outfielder, has been at AAA Oklahoma City all season and is hitting .299 with 31 stolen bases in 74 games.
With a big league outfield that already consists of Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, and Christian Yelich, Marisnick would have been hard pressed to find an everyday roll in Miami. Moran was originally pegged as the Marlins third baseman of the future after being drafted out of North Carolina, but questions remain about his ability to hit for power at the highest level.
