Miami Zoos And Wildlife Centers Attempt Recovery Following Hurricane Irma

Zoo Miami says it could be closed for up to two months following Hurricane Irma.

According to a zoo spokesperson, all the park's mammals survived the storm, although a few birds died of stress. In fact, Irma didn't devastate the zoo as much as Andrew did in 1992.

But the length of time the zoo will remain closed depends on being able to contract help to clear debris and repair fences.

Overall, the zoo feels lucky that it made it through Irma relatively intact, unlike 25 years ago when Andrew decimated the park, forcing it to be almost completely rebuilt.

Similarly, Jungle Island in Miami is still picking up the pieces following Hurricane Irma.

Managing Director Christopher Gould said there was significant damage done to the zoo park, but that all animals were okay, and that backup systems and action plans were in place, before, during, and after the storm.
