South Florida Congressman Urges U.S. Army Corps To Stop Lake O Discharges

A South Florida congressman wants the Lake Okeechobee discharges to stop.

"It is a day to day fight with the (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers over this. And that has been a fight for the last four years for me."

Stuart Republican Brian Mast (D-18) wrote to the Army Corps, asking if they would continue releasing water from the big lake if it tests above the EPA standard of what is considered safe for humans.

Mast says that water in Lake Okeechobee has frequently tested above the toxicity level that the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe.

The Army Corps has recently said that the discharges would continue indefinitely, to bring the lake's level down ahead of rainy season.

The level is currently just above 14 feet.
