Since 1973 in MLB, the National League and the American League have had separate rules with the Designated Hitter. Players like David Ortiz and Edgar were able to enjoy huge careers with this rule change making them both very successful hitters, but not asking the stars to preform any other other task.
2 Different set of rules for the leagues causes the mangers in NL and AL to manage the game completely differently and that's not even mentioning Inter-league play or the World Series.
